4 So Abram went, as Yahweh had told him. Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Abram took Sarai his wife, Lot his brother’s son, all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they went to go into the land of Canaan. They entered into the land of Canaan.

6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time, Canaanites were in the land. 7 Yahweh appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring.”

He built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him. 8 He left from there to go to the mountain on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to Yahweh and called on Yahweh’s name. 9 Abram traveled, still going on toward the South.

After Abram uprooted his life and moved to Canaan, the story says God visibly appeared to him. Are you surprised to see God showing up in person as opposed to speaking audibly or through thoughts? Why or why not?

Deep Analysis

Notice the author wrote that God “appeared” twice in the same verse (Genesis 12:7), just in case readers missed it the first time: “Yahweh appeared to Abram… He built an altar there to Yahweh, who had appeared to him.”

Moving across the country after hearing a voice admittedly sounds crazy, but Abram’s faith is validated because God later appears to him. What do you find inspiring about this story and why?

Today, it can be a challenge to figure out whether or not a thought is actually from God, from our own mind, or just a feeling. Similarly, many people wonder if the writers of the Bible confused some or all of their own thoughts with God’s thoughts. How would your perception of the Bible change if God didn’t just speak to the writers using thoughts, but actually took on a visible form to speak to them face-to-face?

Key Takeaways

The Big Surprise

The big surprise here is that God appeared to Abram in person. This is the start of a pattern in the Bible that could help answer the question, “How do we know the Bible is actually from God?”

This series will answer that question by revealing God’s direct, physical appearances throughout the Bible.
