The War in Heaven

Four seals break. Four riders ride out. And a dragon loses his place in heaven.

A sealed scroll cracks open with teal supernatural light on a carved altar

Have you ever had to deal with a bad roommate, tenant, or neighbor who just wouldn’t leave? How did it finally get resolved?

Last time, the Lamb took the scroll from God’s hand and heaven erupted in worship. Now the seals start breaking — and every broken seal sends something out into the world. The case against the rebel powers is underway, and before it’s over, the fight reaches heaven itself. Watch the scene below to see what happens when the first four seals are opened.

The Four Seals  ·  Revelation 6:1–8

✦
Revelation 5:6–10 & 6:1–2The Lamb opens the seals to execute God’s decree and reclaim his domain

Revelation 5:6–10

6I saw in the middle of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the middle of the elders, a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God, sent out into all the earth. 7Then he came, and he took it out of the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8Now when he had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each one having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9They sang a new song, saying,

“You are worthy to take the book,
and to open its seals:
for you were killed,
and bought us for God with your blood,
out of every tribe, language, people, and nation,
10and made us kings and priests to our God,
and we will reign on the earth.”

Revelation 6:1–2

1I saw that the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures saying, as with a voice of thunder, “Come and see!” 2And behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow. A crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer.

Revelation 12:7–12War in heaven; the dragon and his angels lose their place in the council

7There was war in the sky. Michael and his angels made war on the dragon. The dragon and his angels made war. 8They didn’t prevail, neither was a place found for them any more in heaven. 9The great dragon was thrown down, the old serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

10I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, the power, and the Kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ has come; for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God day and night. 11They overcame him because of the Lamb’s blood, and because of the word of their testimony. They didn’t love their life, even to death. 12Therefore rejoice, heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the devil has gone down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has but a short time.”

Colossians 2:13–15Christ disarms the rulers and authorities, making a public spectacle of them

13You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross; 15having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

1 One theory is that the scroll in Revelation 5 represents the legal title to the world and the judgment of the spirits who corrupted it. Imagine you rented your house out and the tenants destroyed it. Now you’re stuck repairing the house and have to evict the tenants. In the Bible, the corrupt spirits are almost like “squatters” in our world, but they don’t just tear it up, they corrupt the people who live there too. How does thinking of the scroll as the “legal title” to the world help you understand why Jesus is the only one who can open it?

War in Heaven  ·  Play as Michael the archangel

✦
2 In Revelation 12, a war breaks out in heaven around the time of Jesus’s birth. An archangel named Michael leads a battle to drive Satan, described as a red dragon, out of heaven. It seems as though Satan had access to God’s throne room until shortly after Jesus’s birth. Why do you think God let Satan stick around for so long? What does this help us learn about God?

3 Ancient people often told stories of multi-headed dragons, but they weren’t literal biological reptiles. They were symbolic images of chaos in the world. Considering this, why do you think John depicted Satan as a dragon who caused a war in heaven?
Your thoughts
4 Revelation 12:11 says the dragon is overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.” Christians sometimes share their story about how God changed their life. It’s often called a “testimony.” We’ve been using a legal term without even realizing it. What is the significance of seeing your own story as a form of legal testimony against evil spiritual powers?
View a suggested answer
One potential way to look at this is that when you share your story with others, you’re actually giving testimony for God and against evil. When you tell others what you’ve witnessed God do in your own life, you’re actually participating in a spiritual court case and reclaiming God’s territory.

5 When the fallen spirits were evicted from heaven and thrown down to earth knowing their time is short, their anger turns toward humans. How does this explain some of the challenges you might be living through right now?

Why It Matters

01
This is a court case, not chaos. The seals don’t unleash random disasters. The Lamb opens a legal document, and each rider carries out what it decrees. When the elder says “the legal proceedings begin,” he means it: God is moving to take back the territory the rebel spirits stole.
02
The dragon lost his seat. After the King is born and enthroned, there is “no place found for them any more in heaven.” The accuser who stood in God’s courtroom day and night is thrown out — not by bigger firepower, but “because of the Lamb’s blood.” Paul says the cross made a public spectacle of them.
03
Your story is evidence. The dragon is overcome “by the word of their testimony.” Every time you tell what God has done in your life, you take the stand in that courtroom — and you’re testifying for the side that has already won.
